Last year, for example, the airline flew approximately 250 million passenger-kilometers. This unusual unit of measurement is obtained by multiplying the number of company passengers by the distance they travel.
The history of American Airlines goes back to 1926. The first flight was to deliver mail from Chicago to St. Louis on a small biplane, but this flight was the beginning of a great journey. A couple of years later, a company called American Airways was formed by merging several dozen (!) smaller airlines. During World War I (as well as World War II), most of the company's fleet was used for military purposes.
In 1936 the first in the history of air transportation was organized the loyalty program for VIP-class passengers, and already in 1937 the airline "American Airlines" carried its millionth passenger.
There are also dark moments in the history of the company. For example, in 2001, it was the American Airlines plane that was seized by terrorists and crashed into the World Trade Center building in New York City - it was a legendary disaster on September 11. After that accident, the company had been involved in ship disputes for several years and suffered huge losses. However, it managed to overcome the crisis by 2005, when for the first time after several years of reporting, the company was able to show an income of $58 million in just the second quarter.
Today there is even a museum dedicated to the history of American Airlines. It was organized in 1993 and is named after the first manager of the company who raised it to a worthy level before World War II - Cyrus Rowlett Smith. The company has offices in many countries and is the founder of Oneworld, the world's largest airline alliance.
Most of the company's flights are to the USA because this country is very large, as well as to Latin America. Since the mid-2000s, the company has been actively operating flights to Asian countries. In 2008, the first flight to Moscow's Domodedovo Airport was made, and a website in Russian was launched at the same time. American Airlines also provides flights to Canada, the Caribbean islands and European countries. The airline has five international airports in the U.S. - all due to the impressive aircraft fleet of the carrier, whose aircraft need to be maintained somewhere.
